According to officials, the fire erupted around midnight in Arpora, North Goa, claiming the lives of at least 23 individuals. The Press Trust of India reported that several tourists were among the victims.
Goa's Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, expressed his sorrow on X, stating, "Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people." He further mentioned that he had visited the site and ordered an investigation. He emphasized that those responsible would face strict legal consequences, with any negligence being dealt with firmly.
Chief Minister Sawant also informed journalists that the casualties included "three to four" tourists. While some died from burn injuries, the majority succumbed to suffocation.
