Ethiopia WTO Membership: Negotiations Enter Decisive Phase! (2026)

Ethiopia’s WTO accession moves into a pivotal, hopeful chapter, according to Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, who credited the government’s steadfast leadership and determined commitment for guiding the negotiations forward.

A dedicated national platform in Addis Ababa, themed “Integrating Ethiopia, Transforming Trade,” gathered to discuss the country’s path toward World Trade Organization membership and the ongoing talks.

In his remarks, Temesgen stressed that although Ethiopia has long participated as a founder in many major international institutions, its absence from the WTO has endured far too long. With a population and potential that match any global economy, he argued, Ethiopia should be an active participant in the international trading system.

“Our rightful place is at the table—shaping the rules, widening opportunities, and ensuring our people can compete, innovate, and prosper on the world stage,” he stated.

The prime minister’s deputy credited resolute leadership and bold, homegrown economic reforms with reviving negotiations that had stalled for more than twenty years, noting that the process is now in a decisive and optimistic phase. He pointed to the impressive progress made in the last seven months as a clear indication that the finish line is within reach.

Membership in the WTO, he explained, would open new horizons for Ethiopia by significantly expanding market access, increasing transparency and predictability in trade and investment, and strengthening the country’s appeal as a reliable partner for global actors.

Beyond market access, he added, WTO membership would bring the discipline necessary to reinforce economic governance, ensuring that reforms pursue not only ambition but also stability, credibility, and durability. This would help fortify institutions, uphold the rule of law in markets, and anchor Ethiopia within a framework that emphasizes fairness and reciprocal opportunity.

While affirming the government’s commitment to conclude negotiations as swiftly as possible, Temesgen underscored that success will require nationwide collaboration. He called on the private sector to mobilize its energy and expertise, all government bodies to rise to the task, and international partners to deepen their support.

The deputy premier closed by urging unity, asserting that a concerted effort will enable Ethiopia to integrate into the global trading system and usher in a new era of shared prosperity.

Would you agree that rapid, coordinated reforms are essential to realize WTO membership, or do you think a slower, more cautious approach could yield better long-term outcomes for Ethiopia? Share your thoughts in the comments.
